Welcome to Country

Moort Designs acknowledges the Traditional Owners and custodians of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Lands across Australia. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging, and recognise the enduring cultural, spiritual and intellectual contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

Moort Designs was conceived on Country and is informed by Aboriginal ways of knowing, making and storytelling. As our work is shared, exhibited and experienced across Australia, we acknowledge the cultural authority of Traditional Owners on every land, sea and waters where our products are placed. We recognise that each Country is distinct and commit to respectful engagement, guidance and collaboration wherever our work travels.

This land always was, and always will be Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander land.

where art meets function

Moort means family.

Moort Designs is an Aboriginal owned and led design practice creating meaningful products that acknowledge and celebrate the world’s oldest continuous living culture. Established on Noongar Country and shared across Aboriginal Lands, Moort Designs brings together art, function, and cultural knowledge to create objects grounded in place and purpose.

Drawing on over 30 years of experience, our work is informed by Country and shaped by stories that endure. Each product is developed through close cultural engagement, translating artistic expression into functional design that is built to last.

All Moort Designs products are purpose designed and made in Australia on Aboriginal Country. Using proprietary machinery and fabrication techniques developed specifically for Moort Designs, our process combines innovation with cultural integrity to deliver robust, high quality outcomes.

Designed to integrate seamlessly into everyday environments, our products are practical, commercially ready, and distributed nationally. Each piece offers a considered moment of recognition, connection, and respect, carrying culture into the spaces where people gather, rest, and move.

Symbols are crucial to indigenous heritage. In Noongar, this symbol represents a meeting place which is the central concept to this project.

To sit, means to contribute to the atmosphere supporting the act of gathering, sharing ideas, thoughts and oral memories. The act of sitting and yarning circles is embedded in the form, design and meaning of moort.

Two Practices, One Shared Way Forward

Moort began through the collaboration of two friends: Peter Farmer Senior, a Noongar artist, and Jason Hirst, a contemporary artist. Their partnership brings together distinct but complementary practices, forming a shared approach where contemporary design meets Noongar art. Guided by respect for Country and community, Moort creates objects that carry story, purpose, and connection.

Our Partnership with Tait.

We partnered with Tait, an Australian design studio celebrated tor its craftsmanship and locally made furniture. Together, we share a commitment to sustainable making, storytelling through design, and celebrating Country through contemporary Australian form.

Our Colour Range

We use a Powder Coating Process to colour the products. Powder coating is a dry finishing process, which is based on polymer resin systems. A process called electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) is used to achieve the application of powder coating to a metal substrate. This application method uses a spray gun, which applies an electrostatic charge to the powder, which are then attracted to the grounded part. After application of the powder coating, the parts enter a curing oven where, with the addition of heat, the coating chemically reacts to produce a solid ‘skin’.

Connection to Country

Our work is guided by a deep and ongoing connection to Country. The land holds stories that reach far beyond our lifetime, carrying the voices of the ancestors, families and communities, who have cared for these places for countless generations. We approach every design with respect for those stories, listening to the rhythms, colours and textures of the landscape and allowing them to shape the way we create.

For us, Country is not a backdrop, it is a living presence that informs each line, form and material choice. We design with care, with humility and with the understanding that every place has meaning. Through our work, we hope to honour the spirit of the land, celebrate community, and create spaces that feel grounded, connected and true to the stories that belong here.

Grounded in Our Beginnings

Moort means family. At Moort Designs, our work is shaped by Noongar language, symbols and ways of understanding place. Each piece begins with a word, a story and Peter’s artwork drawn from Country, translated into contemporary forms that speak to connection, gathering and everyday use.

The artwork featured here, created by Peter Farmer Senior, expresses the strength of community through layered lines and movement. Biddi lines flow across the surface, representing journeys, relationships and shared pathways. Colour becomes a language of connection, carrying stories of people, place and belonging.

Our designs resonate with the cultures of First Nations peoples by embedding meaning into form rather than decoration. Furniture becomes more than an object. It becomes a place to sit together, to pause, to move and to gather. Guided by culture, shaped through collaboration and grounded in respect, Moort Designs exists to honour story, Country and community through thoughtful, enduring design.
